The Guild that helped me Change My Life
As long as I can remember, my life was marked by the fact that I had a physical disability. Right after my birth, the doctors noticed that my left leg seemed a bit shorter than my right. At first, they assured my parents that this was a normal variation that many children have at their young age. In fact, they were confident that the whole thing would be corrected once I start growing and walking. However, at the same time, they were adamant that my parents continue to bring me in into regular checkups.
As months passed and I continued to come to the doctor, the same medical professionals were less than sure that everything is going to correct itself. I began to be sent to specialists who examined me and slowly but surely, the prognosis became less and less optimistic. Finally, one of the top orthopedic surgeons told my parents that the same condition will most likely be permanent. Both of them were simple but good people, a young couple that met and fell in love while they both worked at a big shopping mall. The news hit them like a ton of bricks, but they managed to compose themselves and try their best to give me a normal life.
As the specialist doctor foretold, I started walking like all other children, but I had more difficulty doing it and my shorter leg made me limp. The months turned into years and I slowly became a boy ready for school. Thanks to my wonderful parents, I never felt as if anything was wrong with me and I was a happy child. But, in school, it did not take long for my classmates to begin to ridicule and tease me. Naturally, this bothered me substantially and I felt a huge emotional pain almost immediately.
Unfortunately, this made me even more distant to my classmates, who in turn ridiculed me even more. As the cycle began to feed upon itself, I slowly turned inwards, away from the world. My parents tried to bring me out of it, but it did not make a difference. I started spending more and more time in my room, playing with computers and slowly but surely shutting down for the rest of the world. However, little did I know that online, where so many gamers spend their time, a solution to my problems was patiently waiting for me.
The same solution came when I was 14 years old and when I found a game called League of Legends. Better known as ‘LoL’, the same online game was played on millions of computers all over the world and many fantastic coders were working on it constantly with the purpose of making it even better. Since the first moment I tried it, I knew that I found something truly spectacular. Its blend of fast combat and great tactical possibilities allowed me to think, make rests and rush in when it was suitable: all of this made my life thrilling. But, even more importantly, I soon became a part of a guild of players, which welcomed me as one of their own.
Online, I did not have any physical problems and I was not shy. In that guild, I found my true calling as I battled my way to the top positions, always getting better. Some coders in my guild recognized that my abilities were, as they put it, astonishing, which is why they began to coach me. At that point, LoL was already an electronic sport or e-sport with many tournaments and competitions. I did not know that then, but I was about to enter the domain of stardom.
With the help of my guild, I took part in several competitions and online tournaments. I did well, but I got a chance to shine only when my friends talked me into going to a small local physical gathering. I did this, overcoming my shyness and even though my hand shook from excitement, I won it.
This shot of adrenaline was like nothing I felt before, along with the fact that all of my guild friends, along with my parents, were there to support me. At that moment, when I raised my first trophy above my head, I knew that I found my calling.
Today, I am a professional e-sportsman with over a decade of experience. I am completely at ease with the way I look and I feel comfortable in my own skin. My guild continues to support me as I in return coach other young players and coders while I also nourish the new generation of e-sportsmen. The guild and my online game of choice allowed me to have the best life I could have ever hoped for.
